Julia Quinn is always humorous but she really shines here, actually to the detriment of the romance! Caroline comes off as a bit air headed and Trent spends a little too much time mooning over a dead love. He doesn't believe that is innocent and takes her with him. He captures Caroline with the misunderstanding that she is a notorious Spanish spy. Trent is a thirty year old spy for the British war office. After an unsuccessful attempt to force his son on her in order to ruin her and marry into her fortune, Caroline runs away. Her latest one takes the cake in terms of cruelty and they hate each other. She has been shipped to various guardians that have also died. I realize this could be considered a major drawback for a romance novel but I had a great time reading it and was thoroughly entertained.Ĭaroline is an orphan set to inherit a large shipping fortune on her 21st birthday. The draw to this book is the humor and not the romance.
